The Armsworthy
family in America originates from within the oldest county in Maryland, St.
Mary's. The county was formed in 1637.
Armsworthy is of English descent having
crossed over to America in 1681.
A John Armsworthy was transported in 1681 to
Maryland. The Maryland Calendar of Wills for 1703-1713 has an abstract for John
Armsworthy whose Will was probated on 23 April 1707. It lists his wife , Mary
and sons John and Thomas.
These two sons
are then listed in the book Chronicles of St. Mary's County, Book Two , with
the last name of Armsworthy and their birth years listed as1679 and 1689,
respectively.
If John
Armsworthy is the husband of Mary and the father of John and Thomas then John
was born in England and Thomas was born in Maryland. There may have been more children born to John and
Mary.
Baptist
Armsworthy was one of the settlers of Guysborough Co. Nova Scotia, Canada, who came as a result of his service with the
Duke of Cumberland's Regiment (Lord Montague). In the American War of
Independence Baptist fought on the side
of the American Revolutionists .On 22 April,1777 he joined the 3rd Maryland of
Line Regiment as a private , Capt Armstrong's Company , 1777-1780 . After the Battle of Camden , South Carolina,
16 August 1780, he was reported missing. He was released from prison at Charleston on
10 February 1781. He then enlisted
in the British Army as a private with His Royal Highness, the
Duke Of Cumberland 's Regiment of the Carolina Rangers for service in the West
Indies.
He was
discharged on 20 June 1784 at Chedabucto , Nova Scotia.
He received 1
town lot SE1#19 and 100 acres of rear lands at Guysborough
Co.,NS.

years . My mother Essie was born there in 1911.(author) At age 41 he joined the
army # 901519, 193 rd Battilon,March 22 1916. Certificate signed by Lt.Col.
John Stanfield---"The Blue Feather Battilon " or "Stanfield's
Rangers" and served in England as a Sergeant .Later transferred to 17th
Battilon, Nova Scotia Rifles. Discharged Jan.13,1919 at Halifax. Medals
included: British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Sailed from
Halifax 12 Oct.1916 on S.S Olympic and arrived in England 18 Oct 1916. Returned
to Canada 26 Aug.1917 on S.S. Carmonia.
At the sametime his son Arthur served in
England and Europe. Later became caretaker of the Post Office in Truro(15
years) and lived in the apartment. As a very young child I remember visiting
there. Described as: 5' 11 1/4", blue eyes, brown hair, 170 lbs and
Methodist religion.
He later
retired to Wittenburg NS. where he lived out his years.

Belmont with husband and family in what in my time was the Bush Beaver house.
My mother, Essie,and sister Lavinia were
born there. Hannah was a strong individual who kept the family together
during WW#1 when her husband William and eldest son Arthur were overseas with
the Canadian Expeditionary Army. She was bedridden for sometime and was looked after by Jessie Fender of
Scotland , a sister of Bella who married her
youngest son
Covert. My mother , her daughter , also
did her best as a teenager to see the family through hard times. Hannah was
said to be an organized person , a trait which manifested itself in atleast three daughters and
some
grandchildren.

Kathleen Armsworthy Warriner for an interesting account of early childhood.
His daughter
Kathleen has written a well documented article on the life she shared with her
parents in the 30's and 40's in rural Saskatchewan. I quote from it in part:
The first
memories I have of my father are when we lived on a farm in Aylesbury,
Saskatchewan.
They were happy times , and I have good memories from there. ( 1930)
--------My Dad
was a compassionate person , and always took time to listen, although I 'm sure
there were times in those 'dirty thirties' when he , himself found it difficult
to find a silverlining in those dark clouds.
When my parents
returned from Nova Scotia in 1930 , the owner of the General
Store ( L.
Krivel) offered my Dad a job of caretaker on his farm. ----the good times were
not to last long. Within a year Mr Krivel sold the farm , and our family of
four moved into a small house in Aylesbury.
The depression
years were desperate at times. My Dad accepted any kind of work that eas
available ---cut ice for cold storage, shovelled coal from boxcars, helped at
the blacksmith , tended the town windmill and even hooked rugs to sell. In 1931
he had to humble himself and ask his father for monetary assistance. The
hopelessness and futility are evident in the letter which he wrote. He felt he
was a failure in his father's yes when in fact , he was a victim of the times
and circumstances.
My mother use
to do washing and ironing for the local storekeeper and the station agent. One
particular fall the community received a boxcar of apples, cheese, salted dreid
codfish and canned herring from the Maritimes. My dad helped unload the car for
our share of the food items.
In the summers
he worked throught Saskatechewn and Alberta----neeedless to say he wasn't home
much in the summer and early fall.
He was a good
natured person when he was employed and things were going well. He had a good
voice and loved to sing the old Wilf
Carter songs or recite Robert Service poems. He was also a ' jokester'
and delighted in playing tricks on people.

end of the thirities , brother Lewis ,
my sister Maxine, and my brother
Gerald , were part of the family. he had secured the job of taking the outgoing
mail to the train and then bringing the incoming mail to the Post office. This
he did twice a day for fifteen dollars a month.
-----when World
War 2 was declared in 1939 , he was one of the first men in our area to enlist.
he had no birth certificate , but at that time proof of age was not a prioroty.
He always thought his year o fbirth was 1904, and it wasn,t until he turned 65
and had to provide proof for his pension that he discovered, from the family Bible
that his birth year was 1903.
Dad joined the
Royal Canadian Ordinance Corps in Regina , March 4th , 1940 as a Private and worked in the store room.
His regimental number was L 9200.
--------he
embarked from Halifax , Nova Scotia July 24th, 1940 and disembarked in Glasgow
August 1st , 1940.
----in Bordon,
England he was badly injured in a motorcycle accident. In 1942 he was promoted
to Sergeant , then to Staff Sergeant in 1943. he remained in England until he
returned to Canada in September , 1945 and remained in service until September
1946.
------he and
mother purchased a house in Regina . He worked with Western Tractor Inc until he retired in 1969. He worked hard at
the shop , and was very well liked by everyone.
-----he died in
October 1973 of an aneurysm and is buried in Regina.

ARMSWORTHY:
Born in
Belmont, NS to William Alexander Armsworthy and Hannah Castella Felmate
of Guysborough Co., NS. She grew up in the house behind Frank and Blanche (
Staples) Crowe , later occupied by Bush and Clara (Roblee) Beaver
and family. She
attended Belmont School , Colchester County Academy in Truro, NS. Daily she
walked the 4 miles return to the Belmont railway station to catch the train to
Truro and the Academy. (The same Academy attended by her son Garth some 30
years later.)
During WW#1 she
helped her mother tend the farm while her father and older brother, Arthur ,
were overseas serving with the Canadian Expeditionary Force.
She was a good
student . In 1927 her mother died from a long illness with cancer and she left
her beloved Academy to stay at home to look after her father and younger sister
, Lavinia. As was the custom.
In 1931 she
married William Staples and moved to Staples Brook where she raised a family of 3 sons.
She endured the
accidental death of her nine year old son Eric Rowe in 1944, and even at the age of 84 she continued to feel pain and
sorrow.
She was a
Christain by the greatest of faith and was a tireless contributor to the United
Church of Canada even though in later years she expressed grave concerns about
its role in the Christain community. She , on many occasions, conducted
services in the absence of the minister at Belmont Wesley United Church.
An organized
person she frowned on mediocrity . A product of the Protestant work ethic she
believed that if something was worth doing it was worth doing well.
Given the opportunities
available to current youth , especially women, there would have been unlimited
horizons.
She was a
beautiful woman who , until her passing , loved nice clothes and was fastidious
about her appearance.
She loved to
read and to learn, as did her father and does her son. In later years she
became a staunch supporter of the Progressive Conservative Party. Hon. Robert
Stanfield was a trusted politician.
This would have been of great concern to her grandparents, father and brother
Arthur!
Her life was
full of sacrifices for her family. I know . In her last years she found
continuing fulfillment in church activities at First United Church , Truro. In
fact at age 84 she held an elected post. During this time she renewed Academy
friendships and created a host of new ones.
She will not be
forgotten and her memory will find a special place in Belmont for years to
come.

note: the family lived for a time in Crowe's Mills, possibly in the Ernie
Otterson house which would explain why Thelma , Lelia and Covert went to
Crowe's Mills School GES)

notes: In 1999 my cousin Kathleen Armsworthy Warriner of Alberta forwarded a
copy of a letter my Mother wrote to her in 1991. This is a very intersting
comentary by my Mother on her life as a young child during the 1st
World War
and her relationship with her family ,
especially her brother Covert. It reveals a
thoughtfulness and a sense of humour , and an insight to the times. The following is unedited.--GES)
I am putting
down a few things as I remember them concerning my brother Covert. First I must
say we did not spend too many years together when growing up. There were seven
or closer to eight years beween us in age, he was born in Canso Guysborough
Co., NS on Nov. 17 , 1903. I was born in Belmont Sept. 10 , 1911. I would
imagine Covert was about 11 or 12 yrs. of age when our parents left Canso and
moved to a little country place called Belmont. Our nearest town was Truro
about 10 or 12 miles distant.
I would be 3
yrs old and Covert would be 10 when the First World War broke out .
Our Dad and
oldest brother, Arthur enlisted and went overseas, leaving our mother , two
sisters, Thelma and Lelia and Covert and myself at home.
I remember how
Covert being the only male in the house now wanted to protect and help care for
us all especially me, guess it was because I was the baby. He use to get an old
army cap on and a gun over his shoulder and parade up and down the yard letting
on he was in the army too. I was to holler " halt" and stand at ease.
He would go thru this every day , I am enclosing a picture of us in action.
Covert went to Crowe's Mills School , he didn't like school but of course went.
He was a big
help to our Mother during those years. As I remember we had a small vegetable garden. The years slipped by
and our father and Arthur were fortunate to come home all in one piece. They
both had been wounded, Arthur in France and Dad in England. He came home ahead
of Arthur , still stayed in the Army in Halifax . When the War was over the
Government offered to help the return men to find work or get established in
something. Dad and Arthur decided to farm and applied to the Soldiers'
Settlement Board for help. Covert would be about 15 or 16 possibly by now .
We moved to
this farm in Lower Belmont , big farm, lots of acerage , big farm house, lots
of hard work. Covert worked and helped on the farm for awhile , but the farm
was of no interest to him as Dad and Arthur had bought it together. ( One can
understand it)
During these
years every fall there was an HArvest Excursion train went west , when men
would go and help with the harvest, married men came home when finished but a
lot of the younger men stayed out West and Covert was one that stayed. he and
his buddies left Belmont together but i don,t know the year.
Covert was a
very out going person , always singing and happy. He was very popular with the
young people, had lots of girl friends.
We lived about
21/2 miles from the village where the store , school and churches were. Covert
would walk up to the village for the evening with his friends. About 10 o'clock
you would hear him coming down the road singing. He went to the Crowe's Mills
School before we moved to the farm and I don't recall him ever going to the
Belmont School of which I started in Grade 1 or 2.
Covert didn't
write home very often , months and years went by . Our Mother would get very
sad and wonder if he was alright. She past away in 1927 , age 48. Covert didn't
come home to the funeral which was not uncommon in those years as travel wasn't
like it is today. Quite a few years had
past before Covert came
home , in
meantime he got married and i had grown up in my early teens, going to high
school in Truro.
He came home in
the fall with his wife and baby and stayed with us all that winter as we had
lots of room in that old farm house. In the meantime Arthur had got married too
and they had a little boy.
I only remained
the youngest in the family for about eight years when our sister Lavinia was born in Feb 15, 1919. I guess this
all happened after Dad was in halifax and got home fairly often on the weekends
. haha. So when Covert left for the West , Lavinia would be a baby.
Covert worked
that firs twinter he was in NS in the
lumber woods and when spring came they moved in a house by themselves. I don't
know if it is safe to say he stayed in NS for a couple of years at least , but
work was so scarce and I know he didn't find that it was to him . he had been
away to long to come back and make an adjustment again. So he decided to go
back West in the spring , wish I knew the date. He went first and got a job and
a place to stay and sent for Bella and little Kathleen who was walking now and
certainly captured a lot of attention and love . They settled in Aylesbury I think
and started their life together seriousily.
That was the
last time I saw Covert . he kept in touch with his family better now and as we
always gave Bella the credit for that as she always wrote to some of us.
The years went
by and the Second World War broke out and this time Covert didn't have to
pretend he was in the Army. he was a man now ready to leave his family and
enlist. When his train stopped at Truro Sta. on their way to Halifax to go
overseas Dad and Lavinia were able to be at the Station to see him for a few minutes. I was married now and living in the country
so I was unable to see him. I always regretted it, but by the time Dad heard
heard about the troop train coming thru that day , there was no way I could
make it ( we had no phone then).
But thanks
always to his wife Bella who has always kept in touch with the family.

Born in Staples
Brook, NS. Attended Upper Belmont (Staples Brook ) School . Worked in lumber
woods with his father, primarily as a teamster. Farmer and lumberman at Staples
Brook from 1931 to 1962. Sold farm and large dairy herd and moved to Belmont
village. He worked for the NS Dept of Highways as an Assistant to the
Surveyors.
Physically a small man he was a hard worker and his
5'6" frame belied his great stength.
He had a good
sense for business and loved to make "deals"
He love dthe
neighbourhood children who came to see him on a daily basis. He was Mr. Staples
or "Billy" . They would wile away the time with both true and
nonsensical stories. he often had a treat from mother's kitchen and was always
interested in
how they were doing . He was his mother's son.
Like many
Staples he was not a political activist but always managed to vote.
He was proud of
his son's political activities.
Environmentally
he was ahead of his time as a farmer. Crop rotation , contour plowing and soil
preservation were second nature to him. Consequentially his land produced
beyond what was expected and in the 1950's he was able to make a good living
from it. his herd of cattle , inspired
by his son , was a constant delight to him.
He will be
remembered as a good steward of the land.

Passage NS, she weighed 31/2 lbs and assisted by her grandmother Lydia Hines
Doherty was kept alive. After grade eight at Wellington School she worked at
the Sugar Plant in Woodside and studied telegraphy in Halifax. She worked in a
telegraph office in Montreal where she met her future husband. They were maried
in Toronto.
She baptised ,
as an infant, in St Peter's Church , Eastern Passage by Rector , THe Rev'd E
Roy.
Laura May was
Confirmed in St Alban's Church in the 1930's by Archbishop Worrell and
contributed greatly to church programmes including the Choir for forty two years.
According to
her Funeral Service Programme she , "like her Methodist mother before her
, a church woman of some standing, yet never a fanatic".
The programme
also suggests, " in a mild way she
was a mystic and periodically had glimpses into the world beyond this one , the
one she has every hope of entering".
She was also
treasurer of the Woodside Home and School Association for 15 years.
On June 30,
1983 , her 80th birthday, St Alban's Church presented her with a Birthday
Eucharist.
